Over 10 Companies Apply for Vehicle Inspection Licences

Puspakom’s 30-year monopoly on vehicle inspections has come to an end, with over 10 companies reportedly applying to become its first competitors, according to a report by The Star.

Transport minister Anthony Loke mentioned that the exact number of approved companies has yet to be determined but expressed hope that the new operators will commence operations by the end of 2025.

“There are more than 10 companies that have submitted applications for the vehicle inspection licence. However, the final list of approved operators will be announced later,” he stated, noting that these companies will also need time to establish new facilities.

In late March 2023, it was announced that starting September 1, 2024, Puspakom will no longer hold exclusive rights to provide vehicle inspection services, marking the end of its monopoly that began in 1994. Coupled with recent allegations of certifying unroadworthy vehicles, highlighted by the tragic Ayer Keroh accident, the company's outlook seems far from bright.
