Honda and Nissan Begin Merger Talks to Take on carmaker Rivals.
Honda and Nissan, two major Japanese carmakers, are reportedly discussing a possible merger to strengthen their position in the fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) market.
According to the newspaper Nikkei, the companies are in the early stages of talks. Their plan is to operate under one holding company to better compete with Tesla and other big names in the EV industry.
There are also reports that Honda and Nissan may invite Mitsubishi Motors to join the talks, as Nissan already owns a majority stake in Mitsubishi.
Honda and Nissan released nearly identical responses, stating that neither company had confirmed the details mentioned in the report. They added that they are “exploring various possibilities for future collaboration, leveraging each other’s strengths,” as previously announced.
In recent times, Honda and Nissan have been working together more closely, focusing on electric vehicle (EV) development.
This partnership, formed in March, has led to both companies committing significant investments in EV technology. Honda has doubled its investment to $65 billion, while Nissan has announced that 50% of its new models launched over the next three years will feature electrified powertrains.
