The government has allocated an extra RM100 million for federal road maintenance in Peninsular Malaysia.
Of the total, RM70 million will be allocated for 79 periodic pavement maintenance projects, while the remaining RM30 million will be dedicated to 200 non-pavement maintenance tasks.
Ahmad Maslan explained that periodic pavement maintenance includes repairing damaged road surfaces and structures using methods such as milling, paving, overlaying, reconstructing road structures, and resurfacing. Non-pavement maintenance, on the other hand, involves the upkeep of road assets beyond the pavement itself, such as painting road lines, maintaining bridges, fixing drains, and repairing signs and barriers.
A fifth of the total allocation is designated for the southern region. “In the southern zone, which includes Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka, we are allocating RM15.06 million for 18 periodic pavement projects and RM6.5 million for 36 non-pavement projects,” he said.
Johor will use RM8.05 million for 10 periodic pavement maintenance works, while Negeri Sembilan will receive RM5.4 million for six projects, and Melaka will get RM1.61 million for two projects, according to Bernama.
For non-pavement maintenance, Johor has been allocated RM3.7 million for 36 projects, Negeri Sembilan RM2.245 million for 11 projects, and Melaka RM555,000 for six projects.
While this additional funding is welcome, it is not sufficient to address all needs, and further allocations will be required in the next budget. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi previously mentioned that approximately RM4 billion is needed annually to maintain all federal roads in the country, but for decades, only around RM1 billion has been allocated each year.
