Has Proton's e.MAS7 become Malaysia's first EV? Seven trademark applications have been lodged.

During the launch of Proton’s new EV brand, e.MAS, last month, it was announced that their first electric vehicle (EV) will be released by the end of this year (2024). Soon after the e.MAS brand launch on June 13, 2024, Proton filed seven trademark applications with MyIPO, possibly for their first all-electric model, the Proton "e.MAS7". On June 13, 2024, Proton submitted trademark applications for the Proton e.MAS7 across seven distinct categories of goods and services.

Here are the different categories under which Proton filed trademark applications for the Proton e.MAS7:

  • Class 9: Includes items like electric vehicle (EV) batteries, EV charging stations, and EV charging cables.
  • Class 12: Covers EVs themselves, electric motors for vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), and vehicle parts such as airbags and steering wheels.
  • Class 16: Involves printed promotional materials, merchandise bags, leaflets, and car stickers.
  • Class 25: Includes goods like shirts, clothing items, footwear, and headgear.
  • Class 35: Covers services related to advertising, social media marketing, and retail and wholesale services for automatic vehicles.
  • Class 37: Involves services such as EV charging, vehicle repair and maintenance, assembly services for machines, and rental of portable battery chargers for EVs.
  • Class 42: Includes goods and services related to automotive design, vehicle development, roadworthiness testing, and vehicle engine design.

According to reports from Funtasticko, Proton sent several dealership representatives to China a few months ago to test drive the Geely Galaxy E5 EV SUV. The model they tested was in left-hand drive (LHD), but the Proton e.MAS EV based on it will be made for right-hand drive (RHD) markets. It's expected to be priced around RM120,000 when it hits the market. Whether this turns out to be true will be known in time.

To provide context, the Geely Galaxy E5, speculated to be the model upon which Proton's first EV will be built, is priced between approximately RMB130,000 (around RM84,365) and RMB140,000 (around RM90,854).

The Geely Galaxy E5 was unveiled worldwide at the Beijing Motor Show 2024. It utilizes Geely's GEEA 3.0 platform featuring cell-to-body (CTB) integration. The car's dimensions are approximately 4,615 mm long, 1,901 mm wide, and 1,670 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, placing it in a size range similar to that of the Honda CR-V.

The Geely Galaxy E5 is equipped with a front-mounted single-motor setup producing 160 kW (equivalent to 218 metric horsepower). It offers two battery choices, a 49.52 kWh and a 60.22 kWh option. These provide the EV SUV with CLTC-rated driving ranges of 440 km and 530 km respectively. This brings us closer to the anticipated launch of Proton's and potentially Malaysia's inaugural EV.
