The 2024 Chery Tiggo 7 Pro is now on sale in Malaysia for RM124,000, X70 new competitor.

Finally, the locally assembled Chery Tiggo 7 Pro is here to compete directly with its main rival, the Proton X70. Priced at RM123,800 for its top-spec variant, this Chinese SUV offers impressive features for its price.

Yet, Chery is providing the Tiggo 7 Pro at a discounted introductory price of RM119,800 for the initial 2,000 buyers. This makes it only around RM1,000 pricier than the top-tier Omoda 5 for those fortunate purchasers.

Chery Malaysia has launched three other new vehicles in the past year alone, making the Tiggo 7 Pro its fourth addition. Positioned between the Omoda 5 and the Tiggo 8 Pro, it clearly rivals the Proton X70, particularly the X70 1.8 TGDI Premium, due to their similar sizes and some shared design cues.

Under the hood and its tough black plastic cover, the Tiggo 7 Pro is equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. It delivers 197 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque, making it one of the strongest in its class. This engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission from Getrag, driving the front wheels.

It appears that this powertrain is similar to what will be used in the upcoming Jaecoo J7, but with added luxury features and all-wheel drive.

Turning back to the Tiggo 7 Pro, its turbocharged petrol engine allows the SUV to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 205 km/h. It achieves a fuel consumption rate of 7.0 liters per 100 km, which is quite impressive. This efficiency is better than the Proton X70's 1.5-liter engine, which is rated at 7.6 liters per 100 km, despite the Tiggo 7 Pro having a slightly larger engine and more power.

In terms of size, the Tiggo 7 Pro measures 4,513 mm in length, 1,862 mm in width, and 1,696 mm in height. It's a bit shorter by 6 mm, wider by 31 mm, and taller by 2 mm compared to the Proton X70. Interestingly, both vehicles share the same wheelbase of 2,670 mm.

The Tiggo 7 Pro has a decent boot space of 475 liters, which expands to 1,672 liters when you fold down the rear seats. In comparison, the X70 offers about 510 liters with the seats up. Inside, the Tiggo 7 Pro stands out with its simple and modern dashboard design, similar to the Tiggo 8 Pro and Omoda E5, using similar interior parts and controls.

Inside the Tiggo 7 Pro, you'll find a large widescreen display with two 12.3-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment. Unlike some Proton models, it comes standard with Apple CarPlay (wired) and both wired and wireless Android Auto. There's also an eight-speaker Sony sound system.

Other features include full leatherette seats, a panoramic glass roof, dual-zone climate control, a 50-watt Qi wireless charger, and ambient lighting that changes with the music. The Tiggo 7 Pro also includes keyless entry with auto lock, push-button start, seats that adjust electronically and have ventilation (six-way for the driver, four-way for the passenger), a 360-degree camera system, and a powered tailgate.
