Transitioning to Digital: Changes in Road Tax, License Formats, and Renewals - Say Goodbye to Physical Stickers and Cards

The next stage of the transport ministry's digitalization strategy, which calls for the implementation of many projects in 2024, has been revealed. Beginning on February 10, 2023, the ministry enabled owners of private vehicles in Malaysia to view their digital vehicle road tax (e-LKM) and driver's license (e-LLM) on the JPJ Portal or MyJPJ app.

According to the ministry, starting on February 1, 2024, anyone will be able to renew their driver's license and vehicle's road tax digitally through the MyJPJ app. Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated in a formal statement that this will happen gradually, starting with private vehicle owners in Malaysia. He also mentioned that renewing a driver's license and road tax online will save money and time while cutting down on in-person lines at JPJ counters.

For those who renew their driver's license between February 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024, an RM5 discount will be given to encourage the public to choose a digital license. When renewing at JPJ counters, the MyJPJ app, the mySIKAP site, or any other JPJ partner (Pos Malaysia and MyEG), only those who select e-LLM will receive the rebate.

If you still would rather have a paper license and road tax? According to the transport ministry, the JPJ will continue to give hard copies of these documents while acknowledging that some people aren't ready for digitalization.

The actual driver's license and road tax will, however, come in a new format. The new road tax, which replaces the old one that was a disc you had to put on your windshield, will be a paper document with the necessary information. According to the government, drivers are free to store the new road tax in their cars and just need to display it on their windscreens when necessary. Alternatively, you might only rely on the MyJPJ app to have access to the road tax information for your car.

In a similar vein, your driver's license will be issued as a paper slip instead of the well-known plastic card if you wish to have it in hard copy. Nevertheless, as stated in the example format, you will have to show the slip and the expired card. All you have to do to use an e-LMM is display the app.

Are you pleased that you may now renew both your driver's license and your car's road tax online? Please leave a remark below with your opinions on the initiatives of the road transport department and the transport ministry.
